Great Lakes Fishing Reports

Wisconson

Sheboygan September 01, 2009

Sheboygan has bee hit and miss again this week as fish are spread from the harbor mouth out to 100 feet of water. Captain Rick Reamer and I caught a nice 25 lb king aboard the Dumper Dan 4 last week in 100 ft of water. Best tackle has been 8in and 11in protroll flashers in white and green blade colors with rapture flies in Genie, First Wish and Little Bride patterns.

Michigan

Lake Michigan (Overall Report) September 01, 2009

If you were waiting for east wind it has arrived. A temperature break has set up in 80 to 125 feet of water. The best action for Chinooks and Rainbow Trout is 25 to 70 down. Church Tackle lighted 8 inch Revelators with green or white flies or magnum spoons are taking all size fish. Shore, gap and near shore action for pier and small boat anglers has slowed to a crawl.

Patterns and program for the harbor and gaps. The areas around the harbor break walls and gaps have been very slow. Fish them at first and last light of the day for Brown Trout. I have not had or heard of any spawning Chinooks they should be in soon. Shore anglers are getting some fish with Vulcan regular size Glow spoons before sunrise or live bait.

Patterns and program 80 to 125 feet The temperature break to 50 degrees is at 40 feet down. The deepest we have caught fish is 70 feet down with the majority of our fish coming 25 to 50 feet. I start off the main gap in 80 feet of water and work northeast. The last couple of days I have seen more 4-year-old Chinooks gathering for their run up the river.

You will find action on mostly Chinooks or Rainbows with five, six, eight and ten color leadcore with Badger Tackle Vulcan and Reaper Magnum spoons. Downriggers or leadcores 25 to 70 down are taking all size Chinooks and eight to ten pound Rainbows. I use Church Walleye Planner Boards for all my lead cores.

Some of our best producing spoons have been Vulcan Magnum Silver Lizard, Magnum Silver Sky, Reaper Magnum Peacock Silver, and Magnum Fish n Chip. For small spoons the Vulcan Dolphin Green Silver and combinations of silver spoons with green or blue accent colors. Run the boat speed at 1.6 to 2.1 MPH. Let's go fishing!!

St. Joe September 01, 2009

Good fishing this past week at St. Joe.

Kings were plentiful in 80-120 fow. Good numbers of 3 year olds with some 4 & 2 year olds mixed in. 50-90 ft down, 250-300 copper, dipsey's on 2 1/2, 120-175 out. Blue and green dolphins, NBK, Killer Dolphin & Freakin Veggies in stingray and magnum size Stingers. White or green blade ProTroll's with Hypnotist, Oceana & Little Bride Rapture flies. Ace High Silver Hordes in Mother of Pearl, Green glow w/ black ladderback & green or yellow spatter backs.

Some really nice Coho's are showing up in more catches. Red head & green glow black ladderback Silver Hordes along with tin can's pulling Hypnotist and blue dolphins have worked well in 60-120 fow.

Lake Trout have been taken in 90-150 fow using tin can's with Hypnotist and mag Stingers. Fished in the bottom 20 ft.

With cooler temps, look for 4 year old kings in and around the river water. #5 Ace High Sliver Hordes in the Mother of Pearl, lime backs and watermelon work well.

The last leg of the Church Tackle/Tackle Haven Quad Challenge Tournament is this Saturday, September 5th. Call Tackle Haven for more info at (269) 925-0341.

Saugatuck September 01, 2009

This is getting old. Good fishing during the week and then high winds and rough water forcing cancellation of the charters on the weekends. The fish are still out in 90 to 130 foot of water with the temperature break at 60 foot down. The 4 year old chinook salmon appear to be inside in the 85 to 95 foot range and the 2 and 3 year old chinook salmon are in the 95 to 120 foot depth. We are also taking 2 to 4 coho salmon every trip which is a nice surprise for us at this time of the year. Some of these coho are over 12 pounds in weight, which is a nice size for a Lake Michigan coho.

The best methods continue to be 8 in. Hot Chip and Pro Chip flashers and Rapture Trolling flies on wire divers. 11 inch Pro Troll flashers and Rapture flies on the downriggers and then 300 and 200 copper with Ace Hi plugs. The following are the combinations that we a pulling consistently:

Blue Wiggle Flasher and Blue Bubble fly
Green Glow Frog Flasher and Hypnotist fly
Silver Green Flasher and Wild Fern fly
Mountain Dew Flasher and Purple Mirage fly
White Glow 11 in and Purple Mirage fly
Mountain Dew 11 in and Green Fern fly
White Blue Bubble 11 in and Blue Bubble fly

The Ace Hi plugs are green glow lightning, green ladder back, blue glow lightning and the silver red head.

We were blown off the lake the last two days with strong north and north west winds and this should move some cold water into shore and if that happens the salmon will move in front the piers to stage for the spawning run. Check back and see if the run has started. For information or charter reservations, contact me at captron@chartermichigan.com
