Salmon University Great Lakes Product Review

Silver Horde or Ace Hi Canadian Plug

Which one will the salmon want today?

By: Russell Gahagan

Over the last fifteen years plug fishing on the great lakes has gone through cycles. In the past plugs would be a hot lure for a two or three year span and then fisherman seem to move on to something else however kings never stopped eating plugs. In the last 5 years so much good information has been shared by current Salmon University Great Lakes staff members and many other top fishermen that plug fishing is as popular as ever. Last season in Michigan, Silver Horde Ace Hi plugs were the most sought after lure on the market.

The Silver Horde Company makes two different styles of plugs the Ace Hi Canadian plug and the Silver Horde plug. One major difference is the design of the body. The Silver Horde plug is a wider profile that allows a bead chain to slide through the nose of the plug. The Ace Hi Canadian plug is a slender version that has a barrel swivel with fixed hooks. The body design difference allows the Ace Hi Canadian plug to be trolled at a much faster pace than the Silver Horde version. While both styles are produced in mostly the same finishes there are different situations that will dictate which style plug you should choose.

Silver Horde PlugsPlugs are used with success for all trout and salmon species in the great lakes. While targeting rainbow trout and Coho salmon most trollers present there lures at a faster speed than other trout and salmon species. In this case we recommend the Ace Hi Canadian plug over the Silver Horde. The sleek design of the Ace Hi Canadian will accept the higher speeds and produce great. Leadcore and slide divers are two of the most popular ways to present the plugs to cohos and rainbows. On the other hand Brown Trout and Lake Trout prefer speeds on the other side of the spectrum. Fishermen generally troll anywhere from 1.5 mph to 2.0 mph for these two species. The Silver Horde plug is definitely the right choice for these speed ranges. Depending on the depth you are fishing in all kinds of devices are used to get the plug in front of the fish. Silver Horde plugs can be fished on slide divers, downriggers, lead core, copper and flat line boards. King Salmon are unique because they can prefer all speed ranges. Both plugs work great for kings and depending on the water temp, the mood of the kings and the other lures in your presentation, both styles of plugs have their days.
