Lake Washington Trout Derby Recap

By on June 14, 2017

On Saturday, June 10, the Lake Washington and Renton chapters of the Puget Sound Anglers held their eighth annual Lake Washington Trout Derby. Entrants included members of various Puget Sound Anglers (PSA) chapters as well as members of the general public.  The general public has been encouraged to participate in this derby for the last several years and they were well represented.

Derby Chairperson, John Vaspir, said this was the most successful derby ever because 62 anglers registered and because it was the first Derby held after a one-year hiatus.  The hiatus occurred in 2016 due to a temporary closure of all fishing in Lake Washington. John went on to say that derby participants weighed-in 33 trout with total weight of over 41 pounds!  WOW!  The biggest trout weighed 3 pounds 2 ounces and was caught by an angler who was fishing from a canoe!  The average weight of the trout weighed in was 1 pound 5 ounces.  Additionally, 16 children fished in this year’s derby.

The Kids Derby winners:

  1. Kate Flynn 2lbs 6.5 oz
  2. Gavin Lindquist 1lb 3.5 oz
  3. Joey Davis 15.5 oz

In addition to the Kids Derby Prizes, this derby is unique because the derby reimburses the launch fees for those anglers who had children fishing in their boats

The Adult Derby Winners!

The major prize winners were as follows:

  1. Dave Powell – 3lbs 2oz
  2. Kate Flynn  – 2 lbs   6.5 oz
  3. Glen Kincaid – 2 lbs   2.5 oz

Mystery Fish: Robert Mitchell  –  1 lb 11.5 oz

The derby organizers would like to thank long time derby Sponsors, Brad’s Killer Fishing Gear, Outdoor Emporium and Pro-Troll for their generous contributions.  The result of this combined support was that $1,000 in cash prizes were awarded.  Additionally, every angler who attended the weigh ceremony received a prize, whether or not they weighed-in a fish!

Successful anglers used a variety of offerings to entice their fish.  Among the favorites were Pro-Troll’s Kokanee Killer in Holographic patterns, Brad’s Mini Cut Plug and Ace Hi Fly (junior size) trolled behind Pro-Troll flashers, plug cut herring, Silver Horde spoons, spinners and wedding rings tipped with night clawers.

The leadership of the PSA chapters wants to thank everyone who fished in this year’s derby.   Additionally, they want to thank all the volunteers who worked to ensure the derby ran smoothly and everyone had a great time.  A special thanks go out to Derby Chairperson, John Vaspir and his wife Barbara, who without their combined efforts, the Derby would not have been so successful.

So, in conclusion, please take the time to mark your 2018 calendars for next year’s Lake Washington Trout Derby! We will see you next June!
